This is taken from the lower floors of the Salzburg Fortress, looking towards the nearby mountains, with another smaller fortress in the foreground. Such buildings are scattered around central Salzburg, and mark the remains of a wall that once surrounded the city. The larger fortress was repeatedly the focus of conflicts throughout it's long history, but was never taken by force. It was surrendered to Napoleon, but I guess that was in mockery of the proud French tradition of surrender.
