The main destination of our ten day trip to Norway this July was the Lofoten Islands, but we also camped for three nights in Trondheim on the way there. Friday and Saturday were warm and sunny, so we went on a hike in the forest, which was very green and beautiful and offered some great views out over the fjords. On the way down through the foothills we also got to have a sticky beak at some fancy houses - the oil wealth of Norway was on display! The only disappointment was that the famous waffle cottages of the forest are apparently only open to the cross country skiers in winter.
Where's Johnny?
The weather on Sunday and Monday was non-stop rain, so the planned boat trip was traded in for reading in the tent, a trip to the movies, and some shopping - with an outdoor store on every corner and summer sales there were some bargains to be had.
Trondheim has a lot more wooden houses still standing than Stockholm, which is mostly post-1600s stone buildings - maybe the Norwegians are better at candle safety than the Swedes?
From Trondheim we boarded the train north to Bodö, a ten hour journey through some stunning landscapes. There was a lot of snow left under the midnight sun, so we were happy to see the views of the mountains and fjords from under our Norwegian railway blankets. We had elected to take the overnight train, so we got a few hours sleep and then enjoyed the protracted sunset that merged into sunrise. This trip is on the Lonely Planet top 8 European train journeys for good reasons!
