Two years after our first trip to Kiruna we trekked north (well not so much trekked as just flew, it only takes an hour) of the arctic circle again, to show my parents some real winter!
The first night was in Kiruna, home of the largest iron mine in the world. We tried to get in for a tour but it was cancelled because there wasn't enough interest.
We did manage a tour of the ice hotel at JukkasjÀrvi though:
The beautiful clear ice of the river Torne.
The church in Kiruna, with northern lights dancing above it! We were amazed to glance out the window over dinner in Kiruna to see the lights blazing across the sky despite the light from the mine. It was much much stronger and more impressive than last time we were there. The next few years are the peak of the solar activity cycle, so the chances of seeing aurorae are really high.
On Saturday we caught the train even further north, to Abisko national park.
And on the second night we were treated to clear skies and another brilliant display. It really is an indescribable phenomonen.
The start of the Kungsleden, the King's trail, a 440km hiking trail across northern Sweden.
Wolverine tracks
This is the hole in the ice where you could swim after your sauna in the little hut behind us. You wouldn't, but you could. We didn't.
Bunnies!
The view from the Abisko Tourist station where we stayed.
