Another sunny day in Gotland, this time spent nosing around in the medieval walled town of Visby. Gotland is a popular summer destination amongst the Swedes, but it was beautiful and tranquil in early spring. The museum had some great examples of thoroughly old rune stones and some fantastic interactive exhibitions on the 1361 battle of Visby between the Danish king and the Swedish residents. We got a great deal on the cosy and friendly Hotel St Clemens, and even found a really nice fish restaurant called Bakfickan (with gluten-free bread! www.bakfickan-visby.nu/)
Rumour has it that they make some good beers!
The first flowers of spring!
A hole in the medieval town wall, and I just realised this picture isn't straight...
No Mum, you don't look like tourists at all!
This was the moment where I quietly realised that the word And in Swedish means spirit as well as duck. So this is not the church and square of the Holy Duck after all. Disappointing. Nice church though, apparently it's the oldest octagonal church in some area of the world, maybe Sweden or even a larger area. Scandinavia? Probably not all of Europe, but maybe, after its tumultuous medieval trading port days Gotland has flown largely under the radar.
The Gotland flag in stained glass format.
Sankta Marias Kyrkan, I think it was called?
